dental implant is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. The basis for modern dental implants is a biologic process called osseointegration where materials, such as titanium, form an intimate bond to bone. The implant fixture is first placed, so that it is likely to osseointegrate, then a dental prosthetic is added. A variable amount of healing time is required for osseointegration before either the dental prosthetic (a tooth, bridge or denture) is attached to the implant or an abutment is placed which will hold a dental prosthetic.

All dentists performing dental implants should be licensed in one or both of the two areas of cosmetic dentistry:  Prosthodontics and Orthodontics. Also, depending on the procedures, all dentists performing dental implants should be familiar with full mouth reconstructive surgery, various types of imaging, CAD/CAM restoration etc.

Examples of associations dental implant surgeons should belong to:

  • The Costa Rican Dental Surgeons College
  • The American Dental Association
  • The American Association for Endodontics
  • The Costa Rican Academy of Endodontics
  • The Costa Rican Academy of Specialists in Periodontics

What question to ask a dental implant surgeon:

  • How many procedures have you performed?
  • What’s your success rate?
  • What’s your education and training in dental implant treatment?
  • What treatment options do you use to restore missing teeth?
  • Which technique and type of replacement teeth or appliance do you recommend for me, and why?
  • What should I expect throughout the process in terms of pain, recovery time, eating, etc.?
  • What type of anesthesia do you use?
  • What are the risks of the treatment option you're recommending?
  • What are the benefits?

Can you share before-and-after pictures of other patients you have treated?
